My project has been a material based study; I wanted to experiment with locally sourced materials to create an understanding of the materials available to me and their possible uses. After sourcing as many local materials as possible it became apparent a lot of material experimentation and development would be necessary. Whilst researching the materials I collected I became interested in the traditional techniques most commonly used with them.
I want to explore uses for locally sourced materials and develop a process, which allows the sourcing of the material and manufacture of the outcome to all be completed, in one place. Allowing the sourcing and manufacture to take place together minimize transport and cost. The outcome will be a locally sourced organic eco-product identifying potential uses for the material.
From a series of material experiments I began to focus my experimentation and study the material more in-depth. I became interested in the ways I was able to manipulate locally sourced soil using different methods and mixtures to change the properties of the material, varying the potential uses for the material.
After experimenting with the traditional processes I began a new series of experiments involving processes not commonly used with this material. I have developed a few processes such as a process of heating a blend of sieved soil and potato starch, which allows the soil to maintain a solid form. Throughout my development stage I have been able to manipulate the soil using traditional and creative process and addition of organic additives.
